Origins of the Saint Rollox name

Saint Rollox’s founder has a long family history of using the name. Seventh great-grandfather, Charles Tennant (1768-1838), was a business person, industrialist and chemist who discovered and patented bleaching powder. Immediately after granting the patent, Charles and his partners purchased land on the Monkland Canal, just north of Glasgow, to build a factory for the production of this innovative new product. The area was known as St. Rollox, after a French holy man, and is a corruption of St. Roch’s Loch, which referred to a small loch once near a chapel dedicated to St. Roch in 1506.

The St. Rollox plant grew to be the largest chemical works in the world during the 1830s and 1840s. Charles developed the industry based on innovation and perseverance — attributes we value today — to produce a product that is still in use almost 200 years later.
